Why did it get this rating?

This film was classified by Te Mana Whakaatu, Classification Office. You can find out more about classification process and ratings here.

Graphic violence

The film contains horror violence, which has elements of cruelty. There is a killer who kills victims with a knife. Other weapons include guns, a branding iron, and in one case, a car crushing machine. While a lot of the violence takes place off-screen, when shown, it is bloody with detailed injury. Body parts and internal organs can be seen in some scenes.

Horror

The film contains horror elements such as isolated settings, a mysterious killer and unsettling visions. A character thinks she is being groped and strangled by an old woman. Victims of the killer have images carved into their dead bodies.

Offensive language

Offensive language is frequent and often used during casual conversations, for emphasis, and sometimes to refer to sex. “F**k” and its variations are the most common, and “sh*t”, “bi**h” and “wh**e” are also used.

Drug use

One of the characters has a cocaine habit and drug use is shown on multiple occasions without obviously negative consequences. In fact, the cocaine helps this character to work harder and it is presented as normal movie star behaviour. This can make it seem glamourous and could be influential for younger viewers.

Sex scenes & references

We see a couple being filmed having sex for a porn film. While the movement is strong, the scene is shown from a distance so it’s not as impactful.

There is a clip of Maxine having sex in a porn film. Her nude breasts are visible and the focus is only on her.

The sexual references include discussions of the porn industry and the use of the word f*** in a sexual sense.
